Migrants are not welcome

Abstract Figurative framing, in the form of metaphorical expressions, is especially effective carrying conceptual content on an issue and affecting public opinion. One topic that has been heavily debated contemporary Hungarian media migration. Framing starts with label journalists select to refer fled people: bevándorló (“immigrant”), migráns (“migrant”) or menekült (“refugee”). Depending label, different associations emerge, resting upon differing (metaphorical) conceptualizations evoked by labels. We analysed compounds based keywords a corpus approx. 15 million words. Our results indicate while all three evoke predominantly negative frames evaluations build stock people as also identified international literature – such flood, object, business, war crime –, distribution these metaphors does vary, depending a) selected keyword; b) political agenda source.
